Piano Music No.6 by W.Slocombe Lennox consists of 2 compositions 6a and 6b of quite differing harmonic nature though they have one development in common - the spread of the melody and harmonic development over the whole of the piano.

Piano Music No.6b is dedicated to Cornelius Cardew and was planned for a memorial concert. The composer in his early years played Cardews Piano music.

Piano Music No.6b is a major piece in the composers development. In this composition there is an aim to bring out the power of expression through a strongly chromatic composition, but still has the development and cohesiveness the composer aims for by maintaining effective melodies and using the new notation to bring out the challenging natural rhythm of the piece.

Piano Music No.6b is dedicated to Cornelius Cardew because this composition was set out directly as a development of the insights gained from Cardews early work. That is to say the Cardews own developments went in a different direction involving a more graphical notation and a very wide range of interpretation.

It is in 4 sections - an introduction then a first movement where there is considerable development in rhythmic and harmonic integration ( this area exhibits a development in the notational power), a second movement of a dramatic and expressive nature and a finale of expansive resolution.

As mentioned in notes on performance and interpretation - the central aspect of the composition is the harmony this is the master of the rhythm and dynamics. Every note or chord is equally important to bring out the fluent development of the core of the composition. The composers own style of performance with nearly every note having a light but deliberate and unhurried high attack of around 12 inches above the keyboard will also resolve the tempo.

The companion piece to this Piano Music No.6a is a shorter though more dense composition of dramatic chordal development.

The composer is available for the performance of Piano Music No.6b. Due to his commitment to composition he has not reached a performance level for Piano Music No.6a, Pianists wishing to look into this composition for performance email address on previous page.
