Piano Music No.31 by William Lennox was composed in 2001.
This composition is a part of the Piano Music No.30 group and originally titled 30(c) but in the process of composition developments led it to a full sonata form.
Very often in the compositions of WTL there is guiding or even hidden agenda - in this composition the ambition was to challenge the power of Beethoven's HammerKlavier. This was also a 'dig' at KarlHeinz Stockhausen's juxtaposition of his name with Beethoven in one of his record releases.
This composition in form is probably the closest to the Classical structure - indulging in development and extension of cores of the music.
The relationship with the HammerKlavier is that this composition often requires a rigorous and emphatic handling of the Piano and just as Ludwig van Beethoven's piece does, Piano Music No.31 goes deep into what the GrandPiano is spiritually capable of.
