Free Improvisation Jazz seems to have evolved to all sorts of collections of essentially inharmonic sounds as long as they do not include a melody to come within its area. Yet the main innovator in this area Albert Ayler after stating a melody then carried on the improvisational development very much in the strong harmony of the field of his inspiration - Evangelistic Church Music. Similarly the other great innovator of that period Cecil Taylor maintained a strong harmonic control in his improvisation.
It is latter 'developments' particularly from Europe that the harmonic control has been lost degenerating into the free form where any form of melody or indeed cohesion has been lost.
