Nomenclature of Compositions of Electronic Music by W Slocombe Lennox
The compositions are numbered in a similar way to the opus numbers of classical music.
Large compositions have a full number to themselves - e.g. Electronic music No.13 and Electronic Music No.18
Smaller compositions are grouped under one number such as the five composition of Electronic Music No.27, and the 4 compositions in Electronic Music No.19.
Every 7th Major or multiple of 7 are named in the Metaphysica Empirica group - Electronic Music No.14 is Metaphysica Empirica I - Electronic Music No.21 is Metaphysica Empirica II - Electronic Music No.28 is Metaphysica Empirica III; No. 42 is MEIV, No.56 is MEV, No.77 is MEVI.
Recently the composer has taken to producing more direct shorter pieces these are called subcompositions - this started in Electronic Music No.16 these are taken out of the parent compositions.
In Electronic Music No.20a and 20b this has been developed further with pieces designed for dance music which can be over an hour long. For example Electronic Music No.20b-subcomposition No.4 is called - Life on Mars , Electronic Music No. 28 (Subcomposition No.21) is called Caligulas Apology.
Furthermore in this series a more expanded form has been developed called developed-subcompositions these are a step towards the full compositions - for audiences who wish to go deeper into the music.
