Electronic Music No.14 by William Lennox is Metaphysica Empirica I.

In terms of the development of the compositions it is a fruition of the innovations of Electronic Music No.7 which was designated a preliminary to Empirical Metaphysics.

In 1978 the composer gave a talk on the origins of Empirical Metaphysics at Utrecht.

Electronic Music No.14 was the first major composition produced at the Utrecht Univ. Studios composed and developed by predominantly digital means. Although all the sound material was produced digitally the processes involved analog controls derived from the digital productions - this was basic to the myriad of system controls developed for this composition.

Descriptions of these processes are spread over some 5 volumes.

Towards the completion stages of the compositional work - 1979 the studios existence was being put under pressure by the Univ. of Utrecht - and composers were being discouraged as plans were developed for a new discipline - during this process the Composer was forced from the studio and as detailed in related notes - advised to leave The Netherlands.

This composition in full performance is around 90 minutes in duration but various arrangements are possible to make a duration of some 40 minutes. There is an Introduction of some 10 minutes which leads to ExistArea I (X1) which contains the broad sound matrix in which the life-lines flow. ExistArea 2 -X2 is an area of more dynamic rhythm. ExistArea 3 -X3 is an extension of X1 with more expansive life-lines in the spatially rhythmic environments. Planned X4 has a provision for dynamic Holography - yet to be realised. The Introduction and X1 can be performed alone, as can X2 and X3 without the introduction, or only X2 followed by X3.
