Electronic Music No.13 is a major
composition being the final in a series of compositions exploiting the voltage
control techniques prior to the introduction of digital systems – completed in
1977.
This composition had the sub-title ‘Come Alive’ referring to the dynamic and relentless but controlled energy of the composition.
Electronic Music No.13 represents a different order in the intensity and expressive power only possible in this medium. Though it could be seen as something of a challenge to the listener, once you are attuned to its pace it is a piece that abounds in pure musicality. The Italian composer Luciano Berio listened to this composition in preparation for proposed work at IRCAM and compared it to the paintings of Jackson Pollock, though at the time WTL was baffled by this, but now take this as an extreme compliment.
The notes on the production techniques and methods of compositional development with the maintenance of the harmonic control is a volume of some 600 pages.
Essentially this as the last composition to be produced at the Utrecht Studios of Electronic Music before it was converted to the Institute for Sonology, and represents the highest point of application of the voltage control systems developed at Utrecht.
Electronic Music No.13 has only been given public airings at NorthWestern Univ. Illinois and the Chicago Theatre in 1991.
