William Lennox started work in Electronic music in
1966 in his studio in Beaufort Street Chelsea, London.
In 1967 he studied with Hugh Davies at Goldsmith’s
college London on the construction of
basic Electronic music equipment.
In 1969 he moved to The Netherlands to study
electronic music with Gottfried Michel Koenig at the Utrecht University Studios
for Electronic music for 3 years.
It should be noted the G.M.Koenig who was the director
of the studios at Utrecht, was himself a fellow pupil with K.Stockhausen of
Eimert – who initialized Electronic music in Europe.
Stockhausen in fact only composed one piece of pure
electronic music his first studies and his later work was Electroacoustic music
– in fact he accused composers who used computers in electronic music as being
mad – referring to Koenig, who continued his pioneering work in this field.
During the second year the studios a major difference
developed between G.M.Koenig and W.Lennox, while Koenig believed in, and
promoted an aleotoric basis for his compositions, Lennox was concerned with the
development of the power of harmony in music through the medium of Electronic
Music, this was a profound difference and lead to W.Lennox leaving Utrecht in
1972.
William Lennox returned to Utrecht for another 5 years
from 1975 to 1980 as a de facto resident composer, after deliberation by the
Vice-chancellor of the University of Utrecht.
This virtually gave W.Lennox a carte-blanch at the Studios between 1976 and 1979.
During this time the Studio came under pressure from
the University and was changed to the Institute for Sonology where the place of
composers was undermined.
In 1983 W.Lennox moved to the Stockholm Studios for
Electronic Music.
